UW-System Placement Testing for New Fall 2024 Students
All students planning to enroll at UW-Stout are required to take the University of Wisconsin English and Math Placement Tests or have completed college credit in English or Math. Students currently taking AP or college courses in Math and English should still take the placement tests.
All UW-Stout placement testing is occurring online. Placement tests must be done at least one week before your First Year Registration and Orientation (FYRO) date. Placement Testing Registration
Students can register to take the online placement tests by visiting the UW Center for Placement Testing website. You will be taking the tests online at your own convenience.
- Register using your UW-Stout email address so that your scores are sent directly to UW-Stout.
- UW-Stout uses Math Test A, which is online and unproctored.

What to Expect After Your Register for Your Placement Tests
- Within two days of completing the registration form, you will receive an email from Meazure Learning with instructions on how to access the test(s).
- Registering will give you access to all five tests (English, Math, French, German, and Spanish).
- All students are required to take the English and Math Placement Tests.
- If you have taken a global language class in high school and plan to continue your studies in that area while attending UW-Stout you are required to take the appropriate global language placement test in that area.
- The exams will be available on demand and you do not need to complete all of your exam(s) in one sitting but once you begin to take any exam you will need to complete that exam in one sitting. Your web browser must be able to accept cookies, JavaScript, and pop-up windows. It is also recommended that you use the most up-to-date version of your web browser.
- The tests will be timed as listed below:
- English and Math = 90 minutes
- World Languages = 60 minutes
- Upon completion of the test, you need to click on a button to submit your score(s). If you do not your test scores will not be sent to UW-Stout.
- We would prefer that you test on a computer or tablet rather than on a phone. Some parts of the test such as item usage questions and math graphics will be hard to complete on a phone.
- All students are charged a $50 test fee that will be assessed on your fall semester tuition bill.
Will I be charged for testing?
Yes, all students are charged a $50 fee on their fall tuition bill for the UW System Placement exams.
Can I retake my tests?
Yes, you can retake your tests. Retakes are completed in person with paper and pencil. Cost of a re-test is $20. You will have 80 minutes to complete the test. Email advisement.testing@uwstout.edu to schedule a time to take the test.
Once I register, how long do I have to take the test?
Once you’ve registered and received a username and password from Meazure Learning, you have 180 days to complete any tests. After that you will need to re-register for the exams.
I’ve lost my exam log-in information, what should I do?
If you can’t remember your log-in information, you will need to contact the UW-System Placement Testing office at 608.262.5863.
How do I request accommodations for testing?
Students requesting accommodations should follow the list found on the UW Center for Placement Testing website: https://exams.wisc.edu/placement/regionaltesting/information.php
How long will the placement exams take?
The exams will be available on demand and you do not need to complete all of your exams in one sitting but once you begin to take any exam you will need to complete that exam in one sitting. The tests will be timed as listed below:
- English and Math = 90 minutes
- World Languages = 60 minutes
You will have access to all five tests -English, math, and three world languages- for testing. UW-Stout requires English and math. The world languages are optional and should only be taken if you plan to continue your foreign language education at UW-Stout.
It is important that after each test, you submit your answers to Meazure Learning. Failure to submit your answers could result in a delay of transmission of these scores to UW-Stout and the opportunity to schedule your academic advising appointment.
When should I take the tests?
Once you’ve registered, and received a username and password from Meazure Learning, you have 180 days to complete any tests. After that you will need to re-register for the exams.
It is recommended that you complete the English, math, and optional world language exams no later than Thursday at noon (12 p.m.) central time for your campus advisor to receive your scores the following week.
Tests should be completed at least 1 week prior to your First-Year Registration and Orientation date.
What technology do I need to have to take the exams?
Our recommendation is that students test on a desktop computer, laptop computer, or tablet, rather than on a phone. Your web browser must be able to accept cookies, JavaScript, and pop-up windows. It is also recommended that you use the most up-to-date version of your web browser. If you are concerned about meeting these technology needs, please complete the accommodations questionnaire and a member of our team will contact you to discuss your technology needs.
How soon after I register for the Placement Exams will I receive information about the online tests?
Within two business days of registering, you will receive an email from Meazure Learning with a username and password for accessing the exams.
What if I have technical difficulties during the test?
Meazure Learning will provide telephone and email support to students during testing. Meazure Learning staff will be available on Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time, Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time, and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern Time, excluding holidays. Voicemail will accept student inquiries outside of these business hours.
When will my scores be available?
Your scores will be shared with you at First-Year Registration and Orientation.
Why is it important to take the placement exams seriously?
The UW-System Placement Tests have been shown to be very good at determining what English and Math courses a student should take. Please be sure to use the knowledge that you currently have to answer the questions. Using outside resources could result in you placing into classes for which you are not prepared.
What if I cannot take my placement tests before my academic advising appointment?
All students are expected to complete their placement testing prior to enrolling in classes. If you believe you can’t complete your placement tests prior to your appointment, please contact us at advisement.testing@uwstout.edu or 715-232-1465 to discuss your situation.
Computer-Based Testing
Students looking to receive college credit through testing can consider taking tests through the College Level Exam Program (CLEP). CLEP tests are offered on campus at UW-Stout.
College Level Exam Program (CLEP)
CLEP exams allow you to earn UW-Stout college credit in subject areas you already know. Find out how!
- You can earn between 3 and 16 credits based on your exam score for only $130 ($90 paid to CLEP, $40 paid to UW-Stout)
To take a CLEP exam:
- Go online to College Board website and pay for the exam you want to take.
- CLEP Exams > Register for CLEP Exams > Select desired exam
- E-mail advisement.testing@uwstout.edu to schedule a time to take the exam.

Credit from CLEP:
- Review the CLEP Exam/Course Equivalent Chart located on the UW Stout Prior Learning Credit website to determine which CLEP exams will transfer to UW-Stout. Students must score 50 or higher to receive credit.

Testing Accommodations
UW-Stout will make every effort to honor requests for reasonable accommodations made by individuals with disabilities. Paper and pencil tests are available upon request or when taking a re-test. Mathematics Placement Appeal Form
This form is for students who wish to appeal their mathematics placement level. Students need to complete the required fields in the form and submit it. The form will be automatically routed to the MSCS Department chair, who will review the information provided and determine if it is advisable to increase their math level (note that students can only move up one mathematics placement level). The student and their advisor will receive notification by email with the outcome. If approved, the student will work with their advisor to determine the appropriate course.
