The University of Wisconsin Schools of Education, in collaboration with PK-12, CESA, and DPI partners, are excited to offer a Reading Academy for educators. Designed to provide professional learning supporting PK-12 educators, educator preparation instructors and students, and others in literacy instruction as outlined in WI Act 20. 

Reading Academy Highlights

  • Overview of DPI Act 20 Curriculum Crosswalk Toolkit and personal reading plan template
  • Wisconsin’s literacy experts leading breakout sessions and facilitating team time
  • Team work time throughout the event
  • Networking with peers

We encourage teams of up to three (3) people from a school district or institution to attend. In addition, UW educator preparation students and May 2024 graduates in early childhood education, elementary education, and special education are invited to attend. A limited number of stipends will be available for these UW students and graduates.

Heidi Eliopoulos

Dr. Heidi Eliopoulos is the Superintendent of Schools in Altoona, WI. She has served in education since the year 2000 and as a superintendent since 2015. Dr. Eliopoulos has a bachelor’s degree in English education from UW Eau Claire, a master’s degree in educational administration from UW - Superior, and a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Nebraska. Dr. Eliopoulos believes strongly in the power of education as the vehicle with which we will make our communities stronger.

Stacy Gray

Stacy Gray is an advocate for meaningful, culturally relevant, and evidence-based early literacy education. Currently, she serves as an early literacy consultant for the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. With over twenty 20 years of experience in education, she has served in the roles of college professor, assessment and licensure coordinator, literacy consultant, director of instruction, literacy coordinator, literacy coach, reading specialist, reading teacher, and classroom teacher. Throughout her career, Dr. Gray has valued professional collaboration and community service in order to advance equitable opportunities for literacy learning. She earned her doctorate in Language and Literacy (Ph.D.) from Cardinal Stritch in Milwaukee, WI. Her equity-driven qualitative dissertation, “A Virtual Photovoice Early Literacy Study with Karenni Mothers," focused on culturally and linguistically diverse children’s lived literacy experiences to promote family partnerships for culturally sustaining and relevant early literacy instruction. Dr. Gray’s research interests encompass all aspects of early literacy, with a particular focus on asset and evidence-based literacy curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

Robyn Bindrich

Robyn Bindrich is a literacy consultant for the Wisconsin Department of Education. She supports schools in implementing standards-based instruction and assessment in K-12 literacy by focusing on systems level work and supports.  Prior to joining DPI, she served Wisconsin K-12 schools as a middle school ELA teacher and as a K-12 literacy coach.

Removing Barriers in Universal Instruction for Individual Learners 

Includes an overview of equitable, multi-level systems of support and Universal Design for Learning; how to meet the needs of individual students within Act 20 and build in supports.

Tanya Morin

Tanya Morin has been the Dual Language/Bilingual-Bicultural Education Consultant at the Department of Public Instruction since March of 2022. Prior to her current role, Tanya served as the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant Consultant at DPI, and taught in bilingual education programs in Texas, Massachusetts and Wisconsin. Tanya received a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from UW-Madison, where she focused on strategies for leveraging EL students’ out-of-school experiences in the classroom.

Kelly Pankratz

I have dedicated nearly twenty-five years to the field of education, serving in various roles including classroom teacher, reading teacher, and instructional coach. Currently, I am a reading instructor at UW-Whitewater. I am passionate about reading and committed to staying updated on the latest research. It is wonderful to do something every day that brings me so much joy.

Kathryn Allen

Kathryn Allen

Dr. Kathryn Allen has been an educator for more than 30 years. Her experience includes work in early childhood and elementary education, as well as teacher education at the undergraduate and graduate levels. She received National Board Certification while teaching in St. Paul Public Schools and continues to model and encourage the practices of inquiry and reflection emphasized in the National Board Certification process. 

Dr. Allen’s research interests include teacher learning, particularly as applied to foundational literacy concepts. Her research supports the idea that collaborative, situated, teacher-centered professional learning holds promise as a meaningful way for educators to serve as literacy leaders in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.
