Following is a Q&A with one of the 1,375 students who received a diploma May 6 at UW-Stout.

Name: Michael Guzman

Hometown: Racine
Major: Manufacturing engineering

Awards, honors: Outstanding Co-op Student of the Year, Samuel E. Wood Medallion Award

Why did you choose UW-Stout? When I was a senior in high school I had originally planned on enrolling in a manufacturing apprenticeship and getting an associate degree in the manufacturing field. I didn’t think there were any universities that offered hands-on programs like UW-Stout. I was intrigued by the practical courses in the manufacturing engineering program, and I immediately knew that coming to UW-Stout would be a great decision.

What are the biggest challenges you faced in earning your degree? The biggest was time. Over the past five years I put a substantial amount of time and effort into all the activities I have been part of. Student organizations, intramural sports, my degree, my job and trying to maintain a social life was very difficult, but I was able to adapt and find balance.

What stands out among your college experiences? The great sense of community on campus. I have been fortunate enough to have met some amazing individuals who have always encouraged me to step up to challenges. The support and guidance I received at UW-Stout has been an enormous part of where I am today.

What’s next? I will be working as a manufacturing engineer at Fischer USA Inc. in my hometown of Racine. I have a strong interest in furthering my education in the area of business administration.
