First-Year Student Scholarship

Multicultural Affinity Group (MAG) Scholarship (New Incoming Undergraduate Students)

This scholarship recognizes new incoming students who have shown significant accomplishments that include strong academic performance, notable personal achievements and resilience, and leadership through employment, community service, extracurricular activities, or other engagements.

Award Amount: $2,500 

Eligibility Criteria

  • United States citizen or permanent resident 
  • Have a minimum high school cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Must be first generation, low-income, and/or intend to participate in at least one of the following affinity groups in the incoming academic year: Black Student Union, Hmong Stout Student Organization, Latinos Unidos, and Native American Student Organization
  • Demonstrate notable personal achievements and resilience in the face of challenges (i.e. evidence of ability to overcome adversity)
  • Demonstrate leadership through employment, community service, extracurricular activities, or other relevant engagements.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) should be completed no later than May 1st or as close to that date as possible for the application to be considered. 

PLEASE NOTE: This is a separate application process from the Foundation and Admissions scholarships. You must apply through this application and submit ALL required application materials by the deadline date to be considered.

Second-Year (and Beyond) Grants & Scholarships

Multicultural Affinity Group (MAG) Scholarship (Returning Undergraduate Students)

This scholarship recognizes returning undergraduate students who have shown significant accomplishments that include strong academic performance, notable personal achievements and resilience, and leadership through employment, community service, extracurricular activities, or other engagements.

Award Amount: $2,500 

Eligibility Criteria

  • United States citizen or permanent resident 
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher
  • Must be first generation, low-income, and/or intend to participate in at least one of the following affinity groups in the incoming academic year: Black Student Union, Hmong Stout Student Organization, Latinos Unidos, and Native American Student Organization
  • Demonstrate notable personal achievements and resilience in the face of challenges (i.e. evidence of ability to overcome adversity)
  • Demonstrate leadership through employment, community service, extracurricular activities, or other relevant engagements.

Lawton Undergraduate Multicultural Retention Grant 

The intent of the Lawton Undergraduate Multicultural Retention Grant (LUMRG) is to provide financial assistance to designated underrepresented undergraduate students to improve opportunities for retention and graduation and lessen the burden of student debt. Limited awards available.

Award Amount: $3,000

Eligibility Criteria

  • United States citizen or permanent resident
  • Must be Wisconsin resident
    • LUMRG funds are not available to out of state residents. Minnesota reciprocity is not included in this grant program.
  • Statutorily designated minority (Black, Native American, Hispanic/Latinx & Southeast Asian-Vietnamese, Cambodian, Laotian, Hmong)
  • Undergraduate student seeking first bachelor’s degree
  • Completed at least 24 credits
  • Minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average
  • Financial need (determined by financial aid office with FAFSA application)
  • Enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits per semester

Special students and students working towards a second undergraduate degree are not eligible.

Graduate Student Grants

Advanced Opportunity Program

The intent of the Advanced Opportunity Program (AOP) is to provide financial assistance to designated minority and disadvantaged graduate students to improve their opportunities for retention and graduation and lessen the burden of student debt. Limited awards available.

Award Amount: $450 per Credit (minimum of 5 credits and maximum of 14 credits)

Eligibility Criteria

  • U.S. citizen or permanent residents at the time of the application.
  • Member of disadvantaged or underrepresented ethnic minority group.
  • Admitted to graduate degree program at UW-Stout:
    • Non-degree seeking students with “special” status are NOT eligible.
    • Courses must apply to program requirements.
  • A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
    • Must maintain 3.0 semester GPA for continued funding.
  • A minimum of 5 credits/semester is required. Award amount based on the number of credits for each semester (award $450/1 credit).
  • Maximum award for full-time student is $6,300/semester.
  • Maximum time to receive award as a part-time student is 8 semesters. Maximum time to receive award as a full-time student is 6 semesters.
  • Must be Wisconsin resident.
    • AOP funds are not available to out of state residents.  Minnesota reciprocity is not included in this grant program.
  • Completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to UW-Stout Financial Aid office.
