Biology helps us understand ourselves, other species, and our place in the earth's ecology, and what life is and how it functions.
In this Section

Biology is the study of living organisms. In order to understand ourselves, other species, and our place in the earth's ecology, we need to understand what life is and how it functions.

In the 21st century, we have come to understand life at the molecular and cellular level to the point we can forever change life on earth. Advances in genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics will revolutionize health care, the food we eat, improve our environment, and if we choose to, alter human life itself. We are also learning about the effects our species has on other species and the earth’s environment.
