Honors College History
Honors at Stout began as the University Honors Program (UHP) in 1994, under our founding director, Dr. Robert "Doc Bob" Horan. The program was just a handful of students and courses at the time, and was housed in a small basement room in Harvey Hall.
Under Dr. Horan's guidance, and with the support of Chancellor Charles Sorensen, the program quickly grew and students began to seek out the courses and programming associated with Honors.
In 2011, Dr. Horan handed over the reins of the expanded program to Dr. Lopa Basu, who became the second director of the program as it transitioned to its new designation as the Honors College, marked with a grand opening celebration in fall of 2012. As a College, enrollments continued to climb and course offerings expanded.
In 2016, Dr. Chris Ferguson was named the third director of Honors College after serving for 3 years as assistant director under Dr. Basu. Today, the college is home to over 550 students who represent every major on campus.
