Join Us at First-Year Registration & Orientation
We're happy you will be joining us at UW-Stout! Your next step is to attend First-Year Registration and Orientation (FYRO). The information provided below is for students starting in Fall 2026.
Fall 2026
For students starting in Fall 2026, email invitations to sign up for FYRO will be sent to students' UW-Stout email addresses in mid-February. Students will be asked to choose one date to attend. Students should select a date that allows them to be present for the entire day.
- May 28, 29
- June 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
- June 15, 16, 17, 18, 19
- July 9, 10
- August 14
Register for FYRO by May 1 to be eligible for early enrollment!
Students who sign up for First-Year Registration & Orientation (FYRO) by May 1 are eligible for early course registration, giving them a head start on building their fall schedule.
Why early registration matters:
Better course availability. Early enrollment increases the likelihood of getting preferred class times and sections.
Less stress at orientation. Having at least one course already scheduled makes registration during FYRO faster and simpler.
More informed decisions. Students receive course recommendations based on placement exams and any AP or transfer credit.
A smoother FYRO experience. Early registration can shorten the time spent enrolling in classes during FYRO, allowing students to focus on meeting advisors, exploring campus, and connecting with other students.
Students who qualify for early registration are guaranteed enrollment in at least one course before their FYRO date. The total number of courses available for early enrollment depends on placement results and prior credit.
Even if students register early, attendance at FYRO is still required. During FYRO, students will meet with their academic advisor, receive their UW-Stout laptop, learn about campus resources, and complete their class schedule.
What to Expect at FYRO
Students and their guests will be split for most of the day. The goal is that students and their guests get the most out of their experience. Full schedules for both students and guests can be found in the drop-downs below.
As a result of attending FYRO, students will:
- Connect with peers.
- Meet their first-year advisor.
- Understand the academic differences and expectations of college vs high school.
- Understand their financial responsibilities and how to pay for school.
- Understand the importance of involvement and how to get involved with student organizations.
- Feel comfortable with their academic plan
- Be familiar with campus resources.
- Feel more comfortable about living on campus.
- Be excited about starting their time at Stout!
As a result of attending FYRO, guests will:
- Understand their role in their student’s success.
- Understand their student’s financial responsibilities and paying for school.
- Feel comfortable with their student living on campus.
- Feel comfortable with their student being supported in connecting to their peers.
- Feel comfortable with their student’s academic plan.

- Know that their student will be supported to live a healthy lifestyle.
- Know that their student will be safe on campus.
- Feel excited about their student coming to Stout!
Before You Attend FYRO
UW System Placement Testing
All new first-year students are required to complete the UW-System placement tests prior to course registration. We ask that you complete your exams at least one week prior to your scheduled Registration date.
Placement Testing information will be sent to students’ UW-Stout email on or after March 15 when the UW-System Placement Test registration site opens.
Software Tools
Download these apps on your phone. These tools will help you to be successful while here at UW-Stout. Once you are enrolled in classes, you will gain access to these tools using your UW-Stout credentials.
- Canvas Student: Canvas is our online classroom (similar to Blackboard or Google Classroom which you may have used in high school).
- Microsoft Teams: Teams is a Microsoft tool for meetings similar to Zoom. We will be using Teams for other orientation functions after your in-person FYRO date. You will also likely use Microsoft Teams once you are on-campus at UW-Stout this fall.
- Navigate: Navigate is your student success tool which you will use to schedule appointments with your advisor, view to-do items and more!
- Multi-Factor Authentication (2-step/Duo): Security is a top priority at UW-Stout and all students are required to use Multi-Factor Authentication. Multi-Factor Authentication, also known as 2-Step Authentication enhances the security of your account by using a secondary device to verify your identity when logging into many of our UW-Stout accounts. This prevents anyone but you from accessing your account, even if they know your password.
